GMP Procedures

The purpose of the procedures described below is to provide guidelines for the organization of future GMP conferences. These guidelines are designed to help the conference organizers with maintaining the status of GMP as a renowned international conference.

Mission Statement

The design and analysis of robust algorithms for modeling and processing geometric data is fundamental to a wide variety of computer applications, including computer graphics, computer vision, CAD/CAM, medical imaging, engineering analysis, robotics, additive manufacturing, and scientific computing. GMP conferences provide researchers and practitioners with a forum for exchanging new ideas, discussing new applications, and presenting new solutions. The conference venue rotates on a triennial cycle between Asia (2020/2023/...), Europe (2021/2024/...), and America (2022/2025/...).

Conference Proposals

The planning for each conference commences two years in advance and starts with the submission of one or more conference proposals by anyone who is interested in organizing the event. Each proposal must provide information about the following:

  • conference organizer
  • location
  • venue
  • potential dates (usually in May or June and not conflicting with other conferences and workshops)
  • accommodation options
  • travel information
  • budget estimate

The GMP steering committee discusses all proposals and decides for one of them.

Organizing Committee

Each GMP conference is managed by an organizing committee (OC), composed of three conference and three program co-chairs. Potential OC candidates may be proposed by the conference organizer, as well as the OC members of previous GMP conferences. The GMP steering committee discusses all proposals and nominates the OC members. The main principles for the selection of OC members include scientific excellence, gender balance, academic diversity, and geographical coverage—one conference and one program co-chair from each continental region (Asia, Europe, America). Usually, the local organizer is appointed as one of the conference co-chairs, and none of the program co-chairs is from the local organization team.

Responsibilities of the Conference Co-Chairs

  • Decide on the exact format of the conference (usually a 3-day, single-track event with optionally co-located tutorial sessions, doctorate schools, and/or workshops).
  • Set up and manage a webpage for the conference.
  • Set up a financial plan. The local conference co-chair assumes responsibility for the financial aspects of running the conference.
  • Select and invite keynote speakers, based on scientific excellence, gender balance, topical diversity, and geographical coverage (preferably one keynote speaker from each continental region), and not chosen from among the OC members. Obtain approval by the chair of the GMP steering committee.
  • The local conference co-chair ensures that registration procedures, conference logistics, and all necessary facilities at the conference venue are ready.
  • After the conference, prepare a conference summary report with statistics (numbers of submitted and accepted papers, numbers of participants, etc.), representative photos, and comments and suggestions for future conferences.

Responsibilities of the Program Co-Chairs

  • Define the submission and review timelines for full papers, short papers, and posters. The timeline for full papers needs to be approved by the CAGD journal staff, to guarantee that the special issue with the conference proceedings will be ready by the start of the conference.
  • Decide on a paper submission system (e.g. EasyChair or SRM)
  • Prepare and distribute the Call for Papers.
  • Set up an International Program Committee (IPC) with 70–80 members, who are respected academics and whose collective area of expertise spans the various topics covered by the conference.
  • Organize and manage the two-stage and double-blind review process. Each paper should be reviewed by at least three IPC members. Authors of papers that are determined to be acceptable with minor revisions during the first review cycle will be invited to submit a revised version for a second review cycle. Only the papers that are accepted in this second review cycle will be accepted and presented at the conference and published in the special issue of CAGD with the conference proceedings. In addition, submissions with strong potential but requiring major revisions will be recommended to CAGD for a fast-track submission process with optional reviewer continuity.
  • Handle the submission of the final versions of accepted papers to CAGD's EES and oversee the production of the special issue with the conference proceedings.
  • Invite the authors of selected CAGD and IEEE TVCG papers that match the conference topics to present their work at the conference.
  • Create the final program and select session chairs.
  • Set up a Best Paper Award Committee.

Approval

The procedures above have been approved by the GMP steering committee on November 15, 2019. They will be reviewed and updated, as necessary, during the annual GMP steering committee meeting, taking into account the recommendations of the OC.
